CropX soil moisture
and ETa sensors

Soil moisture sensors that tell you when to water

CropX soil sensors tell you what is actually happening under your paddock – soil moisture, temperature and soil conditions, measured in real time and sent to your phone. Instead of guessing when to water, you watch the soil and water when it needs it.

Supplied, installed and linked to ReinCloud

Ray Mayne is the South Island distributor for CropX, and we supply and support the sensors across Canterbury and beyond. We can install them for you, or supply them for you to put in yourself. They work alongside the irrigation gear we already service – pivots, laterals and travellers alike – and the data feeds straight into ReinCloud.

What do CropX soil sensors measure?

CropX soil sensors measure soil moisture, soil temperature and soil conditions at the root zone, and send the readings to a cloud dashboard you can open on your phone or computer at any time. The platform turns those readings into irrigation guidance – when to water, and how much – along with crop insights.

Key Features

  • Real-time soil moisture, temperature and conditions
  • Readings on your phone or computer, any time
  • Irrigation timing that cuts water waste and pumping cost
  • Screw-in spiral design with minimal maintenance
  • Integrates with ReinCloud, alongside your pivot control

What is an ETa sensor?

An ETa sensor measures actual evapotranspiration – the water your crop is really using, measured from the field rather than estimated from a weather model. Where a soil sensor tells you how much water is in the ground, an ETa sensor tells you how much your crop is taking out of it.

Are soil sensors worth it?

Soil sensors are worth it when watering by calendar or by gut is costing you in pumping and consented water – or costing you pasture when you under-water. A sensor replaces guesswork with numbers: you water when the soil says so, skip the passes it does not need, and hold soil moisture in the band where grass actually grows. On farms with variable rate irrigation, sensor data is also what makes the prescription maps honest.

Common questions

Who distributes CropX in the South Island?

Ray Mayne Hose & Fittings in Ashburton is the South Island distributor for CropX, appointed through Reinke’s partnership with CropX Technologies.

Is a CropX sensor the same as a soil moisture probe?
Yes. It is a soil moisture probe that stays in the ground all season and reports continuously, rather than a handheld soil moisture meter you push in for a one-off reading.
Do you install CropX sensors?
Yes, or we can supply them for you to install yourself. Either way, we will help you work out how many you need and where they should go.
How hard is installation?
Where ground conditions suit, the sensor screws into the ground and connects itself, and most farmers have it in within minutes.
Does it need its own telemetry?
No. The current CropX sensors connect without a separate telemetry unit.
Does CropX work with ReinCloud?
Yes. CropX data integrates into ReinCloud, so your soil readings sit alongside your pivot control.
What does it cost?
Talk to us; pricing depends on how many sensors your block needs.
